What do the numbers mean?
In Monmouth County, every emergency response vehicle is assigned a number. The format for that number is “[Town]-[Station]-[Apparatus]”. Colts Neck Township’s county number is “84”. Each fire department vehicle in town is then designated a 1, 2, or 3 identifying Company #1, Company #2, or Fire Police, respectively. The last two digits make up the number that classifies the type of vehicle. For all fire departments in Monmouth County, the numbers 66 through 71 are reserved for line officers (Chiefs, Captains, Lieutenants). 72-82 identify Engines. 83-88 are Rescue and Utility Vehicles. 89-92 identify Ladders. 93-94 are for Brush Vehicles. 95-97 recognize Tankers, and 98-99 usually designate Fire Police vehicles. Therefore, “84-190” is a Ladder from Station 1 in Colts Neck.
